Draggin Skin Clutch (Patented) Draggin Skin Clutch (Patented)

FOR THE EXPERIENCED DRIVER

A Clutch That Gives
You An Edge!!

The "Draggin Skin" clutch is for avid four cycle racers who want consistency in engagement along with ease and flexibility in tuning the clutch to fit their track. The engagement of the clutch can be varied from 2,200 to 6,500 rpm by varying spring combinations. A floating spring ring design and a phenolic resinbonded non-asbestos friction material with insulating properties utilized on the shoes minimizes heat transfer, enhancing the life of the springs.

The standard kit comes with three (3) interchangeable sprockets (13,14,15), as well as 4 sets of nine (9) springs each. Additional interchangeable sprockets are available up to 22 teeth. Additional springs, optional shoes (red) and weight kits (7 &10 grams) are also available. The "Draggin Skin" is supported by a racing staff, which constantly evaluates and improves this new product.

"Draggin Skin Clutch"

Don't change the set up until after you have put this clutch on your kart and have broken in the shoes to the drum. This clutch is set up with the brown springs and will engage at approximately 2,800 RPM consistently once the shoes have been radiused to fit the drum. Drive the kart for 15 minutes to "seat" the shoes, then verify the engagement. Avoid stop and go starts, break in the clutch before you race just like you would a new engine. Don't try and see how hot you can get the shoes, drive normally and avoid brake torquing your engine. After you have radiused the shoes to fit the drum, THEN YOU CAN MAKE YOUR SPRING CHANGES.

You can use six (6), nine (9) or twelve (12) springs in your set up. The thing to remember is to do everything evenly, what you do on one shoe you have to do on the other two shoes. The easy way to change the springs is to lift the shoes, springs and spring ring out from the clutch to take the tension off the springs. Make your changes, then just drop the assembly over the sleeve of the clutch and pull the shoes out between the drive tangs. It is very simple and there is no need to use any kind of tool or needle nose pliers.

This clutch is more adjustable than any on the market and it is designed to be user friendly. There are so many different combinations that we cannot list them all. The weight kit gives you additional variables for a harder lock in, but because of the weight differential, you will have to use the next stronger spring. We offer two different weights: 7 or 10 grams. Once you find the combination for your track, it will be consistent for the season since there is minimal heat transfer to the springs.

The clutch can be inboard or outboard mounted with no changes needed. The bushing should be oiled or greased when you are through racing for the day. If the track is real dusty or if you just lubed your chain, it should be cleaned. Use 30 weight oil on your finger and just coat the bushing after you have cleaned out the drum. When you oil your chain, do it with the engine off and after you are done racing for the day. The clutch draws in air through the holes in the drum to keep the shoes cool. Any over spray of the oil from your chain is going to end up in the drum and on the shoes which will vary the engagement consistency until it burns off. DON'T OVER OIL THE BUSHING OR THE CHAIN before the race, wait until the end of the day. Very little oil is going to penetrate into the bushing or the chain, most of it will be spun off and it will effect the clutch performance

Draggin Skin Clutch (Patented)

For Engagements Over 4,500 RPM:

The Draggin Skin clutch can be further modified to accept crossover springs between shoes. Clean out the "V" on the back of the shoe where the spring goes in. Two springs are going to fit into the same hole. The first spring you want to put in will be the crossover spring to join the shoes together. Next, you connect the second spring to the spring ring.

Weight Kit:

For a harder lock-up, weight kits in either 7 or10 gram weights are available. The classes that would benefit most are the restrictor class and the stock heavy class. In both of these classes we would recommend an engagement around 3,400 rpm when using a Briggs and 2,800 to 3000 rpm when using the Honda. When you use the weights, look at the spring chart on your original instructions and reduce the engagement indicated by 200-300 rpm when using the 7 gram weight and 300-500 rpm when using the 10 gram weights. This is based on using all six weights--2 each per shoe.

The kit comes with a snap ring and six weights. The snap ring should be used to hold the spring ring down so the weights don't float up and rub the inside top of the drum. You will see the snap ring groove on the hub when you have the shoes out of the clutch as you install the weights. The weights slide right over the outside two springs on each shoe. We recommend the "A" location for the weights but you may find that you only need one weight per shoe. When using only a single weight then put it on the "B" location.

The weights are needed also after you begin getting shoe wear in excess of 50 thousands (.050). The shoe loses weight when it wears and must be compensated. The easy way to tell when you have to add weight is when the rpm engagement starts going up past where you wanted to lock-up.

The DRAGGIN SKIN is a very flexible clutch. If you cannot beat the competition out of the corners you don't have the clutch dialed correctly. This clutch was designed for a Grand Prix type start and there is not a faster clutch for lock up out of the corners. We are as close as a phone call away. So if you have any questions, call 423-584-6663 ask for Lewis and we will walk you through the set up. You can also e-mail your questions to gummy07@charter.net (click here). We know clutches and we know the competition, but best of all, we know what we are talking about.

The "Red Shoes" give more slip and are lighter. The "Black Shoes" are more aggressive, giving less slip and will take more heat. Avoid oil on the shoes, this will give erratic engagements. Sand shoes lightly if you see oil spots on them.

"TT" Track Tuned

FOR THE BEGINNER

A Clutch That Can Take Abuse!!

TT (Track Tuned)

An excellent oval track clutch that can perform under severe operating conditions: water, dirt, dust, and oil. The major difference in this clutch versus the "SS" style is the adjustability of the shoes and a stronger engagement spring. The drive plate is slotted to accept a special configured shoe that relies on the slots to drive the shoes.

By varying the number of shoes installed, the engagement force at a given rpm can be changed, i.e.: removing a shoe will increase the engagement rpm. When altering shoe configurations in the "TT" clutch, it is important to remember that the shoes must be evenly spaced to proportionately distribute and balance the clutch in order to avoid excess vibration. The "TT" clutch is available in the same tooth selection and shaft sizes as the "SS" series clutch.

"SS" (Six Shoe) Clutch

SS (Six Shoe) Clutch The "SS" series is the most popular style clutch used by the O.E.M. since its introduction in 1970. The clutch comes in many different styles and configurations to meet any O.E.M. requirements. The standard clutch has a broached 3/16" keyway with two set screw holes located 90 degrees apart. The two set screw holes are tapped 1/4"-28. The recommended key length is 1/2". A special IK (internal key) clutch can be ordered for 3/4" crankshafts that has a key built into the hub. There are no set screw holes in the IK clutch and it has to be held on with a bolt and washer.
The "SS" clutch is is the most popular choice among fun kart manufacturers. The secret to its success is its ability to take heat without ruining the garter spring. The spring is made from 302 stainless steel and it can take more than twice the heat of music wire used in competitors "look alike" clutches.

SS (Six Shoe) Clutch

The Gates HTD (High Torque Drive) metric timing belt pulleys are available in 5mm or 8mm pitch. Types of belts, various pitches and recommended tensions are very important considerations when trying to assess your needs. High Torque Drive

Track Tips from NORAM/Ratech

With a tuned NORAM clutch and proper gearing, you will feel an even pull
coming out of the corners and constant acceleration on the straights. For top
track performance, here are some other general guidelines to keep in mind:

Kart Chatters or Shakes
Check shoe position and try a softer, smooth setting.

Kart Bogs Down
Check shoe position.
Springs are too light; therefore, the clutch is operating
below the useful torque of the engine.

Kart Hesitates - Poor Acceleration
Spring is too light - below the useful torque.
Spring is too heavy.
Gearing is too high; add teeth to the axle sprocket.

Insufficient Straightaway Speed
Spring is too light; increase engagement.
Gearing is too low; drop teeth from axle sprocket.

Typical Clutch Set-up
Stock Racing - Heavy Shoe (QN C159).
Modified Racing - Light Shoe (QN C158).

Maintenance
Clean drum and shoe - light sanding is acceptable.
Do not over-oil bearing.
